Discover Utrecht

Utrecht, the vibrant student city in the heart of the Netherlands, offers a rich mix of history, culture and nature. Whether you're a local resident or a tourist visiting the city, there's always something to do. In this blog, we’ll cover four main categories: museums, cycling routes, food and drinks, and cruising along the Oudegracht.

Museums

Utrecht boasts an impressive selection of museums with something for everyone. One of the highlights is the Centraal Museum, where you’ll find a mix of modern and historical art. It features works by local artists and an interesting collection on the city’s history. If you love Dutch history, don’t miss Museum Speelklok, home to a magical collection of self-playing musical instruments. Another must-visit is the Dom Tower Museum, where you’ll learn everything about Utrecht’s iconic tower and its significance to the city.

City cycling route

Utrecht is a true cycling city, with several routes guiding you through its sights. A great option is the Utrecht City Route, which takes you past key landmarks. Start at the Dom Tower and cycle to Griftpark, a green space with playgrounds and flowerbeds. Continue along the Oudegracht to admire the unique wharf cellars and historic buildings.

Leidsche Rijn route

Another interesting route is the Leidsche Rijn Route, which takes you past some of the city’s most striking architecture. Ride past Museum Speelklok and the Centraal Museum before heading back into the lively city centre.

Bike rental

No bike? No problem. There are plenty of places in Utrecht to rent one. A popular choice is Utrecht Bike Tours, offering everything from city bikes to e-bikes so you can explore at your own pace. Another good option is Fietspunt, known for its quality bikes and multiple locations across the city.

Food and drinks

Utrecht’s food scene is lively and diverse. From cosy cafés to upscale restaurants, there’s something for every taste. Start your day with brunch at The Village Coffee & Music, a local favourite. For lunch, stop by Broads&Butters for fresh, artisanal dishes. In the evening, restaurant Gys is a top pick, offering organic and locally sourced meals in a warm atmosphere. Don’t forget to grab a drink at Café Olivier, a unique Belgian beer café housed in a former church.

Cruising along the Oudegracht

One of the most unique ways to explore Utrecht is by boat. Cruising along the Oudegracht is an absolute must. Enjoy the view of historic buildings and characteristic wharf cellars while you relax on the water. Several companies offer guided canal tours, giving insight into the city’s history and architecture. For a more personal experience, rent a canoe or sloop and set out on your own adventure.
